Characterization of virulence plasmids and serotyping of rhodococcus equi isolates from submaxillary lymph nodes of pigs in Hungary.

The plasmid types and serotypes of 164 Rhodococcus equi strains obtained from submaxillary lymph nodes of swine from different piggeries in 28 villages and towns located throughout the country were examined. The strains were tested by PCR for the presence of 15- to 17-kDa virulence-associated protein antigen (VapA) and 20-kDa virulence-associated protein antigen (VapB) genes. Plasmid DNAs were ...

Diagnosis, treatment, control, and prevention of infections caused by Rhodococcus equi in foals.

Rhodococcus equi, a gram-positive facultative intracellular pathogen, is one of the most common causes of pneumonia in foals. Although R. equi can be cultured from the environment of virtually all horse farms, the clinical disease in foals is endemic at some farms, sporadic at others, and unrecognized at many. On farms where the disease is endemic, costs associated with morbidity and mortality ...

Severe cavitary pneumonia caused by a non-equi Rhodococcus species in an immunocompetent patient.

Rhodococcus equi is a Gram-positive coccobacillus that can cause a variety of infections in humans, most commonly severe pneumonia.1-4 These infections typically occur in immunocompromised hosts, although, rarely, immunocompetent hosts may be affected as well.1-4 Nonequi Rhodococcus species have been implicated in human disease, albeit less commonly than R equi. We report a case of severe cavit...

Rhodococcus equi bacteremia with lung abscess misdiagnosed as corynebacterium: a report of 2 cases.

Rhodococcus equi infection is commonly encountered in HIV-infected patients; recipients of organ transplants; and in those with lymphoma, chronic renal failure, alcoholism, lung cancer, leukaemia, diabetes mellitus, and other states of immunodeficiency. Recent reports have also documented R. equi infections among immunocompetent patients. The most common manifestations of R. equi infections are...

Virulence of Rhodococcus equi isolated from cats and dogs.

Nine cat isolates and nine dog isolates of Rhodococcus equi from clinical material were investigated for the presence of the virulence-associated antigens (VapA and VapB) and virulence plasmids. Five of the cat isolates and one dog isolate were VapA positive and contained an 85-kb type I or an 87-kb type I plasmid. The remaining 12 isolates were avirulent R. equi strains and contained no virule...
